Our patients at the PTC have been getting very crafty over recent months and we thought we would share some of their successes with you.
Our craft rooms are still a relatively new addition to our two Centres but are proving to be very popular with patients. It is now well known that taking time out to do a craft of some description, whether that be painting, knitting, model making, or just colouring in, can be very beneficial to your mental wellbeing. Research has found that the gentle repetitiveness of various crafts can have a very therapeutic effect and taking on a small craft project can help us to unwind and to feel refreshed.
Completing a craft project, whether that means finishing knitting a scarf, or painting a picture, can feel like quite an achievement and can have the effect of boosting our self-esteem. If it happens to be a new skill you have gained, or a craft you had never tried before, then the feeling of achievement and satisfaction can be even greater, boosting your self-esteem and your confidence.
It has also been shown that leisurely crafts can help to improve our memory and our concentration skills, so there are certainly plenty benefits to be had from taking some time out to do a little crafting.
Our craft rooms at the PTC give the patients a dedicated place to go, the resources needed, and a chance to try out something you may not have tried before. Sometimes one of our nurses will lead a crafting workshop, but most of the time the rooms are open and available to patients to drop in, and spend some time unwinding and relaxing.
One of our recent patients at Castlebrae crocheted a beautiful banner with the word 'HOPE' in it and made another couple of smaller banners with the word 'LOVE'. She also then crocheted a plant pot hanger from a craft kit and entered it into the Patients Social Committee raffle for that week to help raise more funds for the charity.
Another patient, Douglas Manson, showed incredible patience and concentration by completing a magnificent Lego model of Hogwarts Castle. The detail in the model is incredible and is on display for others to see. Big question is, who is going to dare dismantle it?
Here are a couple of other Lego models that have been completed recently, as well as one of the many jigsaws we have in our craft rooms.
We hope you enjoy looking at these pictures as much as we enjoy seeing all the wonderful creations our very crafty patients create.
